How Mehndi leaves a colored stain?
Henna leaves if not broken doesn’t leave the stain as lawsone molecules are made available (released) from the henna leaves when crushed. So Mehndi is made with dried henna leaves. So when you apply the paste of dried Henna powder, the lawsone molecules responsible for color stain will gradually creep into the outer layer of the skin.
For the ease of making the complex and creative designs, the dried Henna is made into a fine powder so that it can become a paste with the mixing of water. Sometimes it is also mixed with lemon drops, tea, etc so that the stain left is darker.
Sometimes sugar syrup is also applied on top of Mehndi as it is believed to bind the Henna molecules better. After applying Mehndi, the hand is left dry for 4 hours to overnight allowing sufficient time for Mehndi to leave its stain.
Later the Mehndi is rinsed with water and you can see orange stain. And slowly you will see the designs getting darker and darker. This is a temporary work and the color marks wean off with time.
How to apply Mehndi?
The process to apply Mehndi is simple as below
